Although since 1995 all vehicles manufactured for
sale in the UK have had to incorporate an
Immobiliser into the vehicles security
specification, actual alarm systems are still
considered an optional extra or are not offered at
all.
Immobilisers do exactly what the name implies; they
immobilize the vehicle by integrating with some of
the vehicles key components, which will not allow
the car to start unless the unique key, in the form
of a touch key or transponder (remote) key is
present, and the immobilizer deactivated. Although
Immobilisers are a good first line of defence they
provide no protection against a prolonged attack,
car jacking or the removal of the vehicle by a low
loader.
